developed the world's first "intelligent catalyst" to go in their engines,
has a precious metal (palladium) that self-regenerates by utilising the natural
oxidation-reduction fluctuation in exhaust gas. This regenerating effect helps the
catalyst maintain its initial performance for purifying the exhaust gas.

Daihatsu Original Catalyst. Daihatsu's original technology led to development of this compact, high-performance,
long-lasting catalyst for purifying exhaust gas. It replaces previous complicated,
expensive systems that incorporate three separate catalyst converters. Called a
"manifold converter" (it's placed close to the engine), the new catalyst
has just one catalytic converter yet achieves Japan's ULEV (Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle)
Two O2-Sensor System
This system places one O2 sensor
upstream and one downstream from the Daihatsu Original Catalyst. The sensors detect
oxygen levels in the exhaust gas and adjust the air/fuel ratio accordingly to maintain
superior CO, HC, and NOx purification.
How does an oxygen sensor work?
The electrode of an O2 sensor converts the measured oxygen
level in the exhaust gas to a voltage, which the engine computer inputs and compares
to ideal values. Voltage output from the sensor varies from 0.1V (High Oxygen, Lean
mixture) to 0.9 V (low oxygen, rich mixture). The computer constantly reads the
O2 sensor and adjusts the fuel injection rate by varing the pulse width of the fuel
injector "open" time. An air/fuel mixture of 14.7:1 is considered ideal
for emissions and allows the catalytic converter to operate at peak efficiency.
oxygen sensor produces no voltage when the sensor temperature is below 600 degrees
F. Until the sensor reaches operating temperature, the engine computer operates
in open loop mode where default fuel settings are used. The sensor's used in the
Daihatsu's are internally heated to speed warm-up.
The Cuore, Trevis, Sirion, Materia, Terios,
Copen is sold under the name of "CHARADE" in some markets,
these are the new Daihatsu's lasted newer models. Of Course older models are available
but don't have the intelligent O2 sensor system.
