The Subaru EJ engine
is a series of automotive engines. The engine was designed by Masayuki Kodama, Takemasa
Yamada and Shuji Sawafuji of FHI Ltd. Engines of this series are 16 valve flat-4
horizontal, with configurations available for SOHC and DOHC, natural aspiration
and turbocharged.
The Subaru EA engine
is a series of automobile internal combustion engines. All EA series engines are
of a flat-4 design. The EA series engines has aluminum heads with aluminum blocks.
Each cyinder has two valves, one for exhaust and one for intake. They came in either
an OHV pushrod or SOHC configuration.
Subaru are to Introduce a Boxer
Diesel in Geneva
Subaru will introduce a 4-cylinder horizontally-opposed (boxer) turbo diesel engine
at the Geneva International Motor Show May 2007. This is not only its first diesel,
but the first boxer turbo diesel. Subaru had announced at the 2006 Paris motor show
that development of the turbo diesel was almost complete.
Due for its first vehicle application early next year, the Subaru boxer turbo diesel
is a highly rigid unit with low levels of noise and vibration.
This eliminates the need for a balancer shaft which counters uneven combustion pressures
and general roughness. Subaru’s first diesel is as compact as its gasoline units
and combines unusually
strong pulling power at low
engine speeds with high-rev throttle-response.
Subaru's Horizontally-Opposed
Engines are what make the whole drivetrain layout possible. The key to
this flat engine configuration is that its opposing pistons effectively balance
out each others' vibrations.
Compared with In-line or V-type engines, this gives smooth, seamless,
fluent power delivery right through the rev range. (Once again, symmetry is the
secret). Even more important, the design is shorter and shallower than other engines,
which means we can make ours more compact, lightweight and very rigid. In turn,
this lets us fit the engine way down in the chassis, to give that very low centre
of gravity. Both In-line and V-type plants have advantages and disadvantages. But
the built-in benefits of the ‘Boxer’ engine have proved to Subaru (and Subaru owners)
that this is the one true way to harness performance and ally it with remarkable
drivability. Whatever the road,whatever the conditions, whatever the challenges,
we firmly believe that this is the route to genuine all-round refinement.
