Audi A2 Engine

The A2 has two choices of engines, each with a displacement of 1.4 litre petrol and 1.4 litre diesel. The A2 with the high-torque three-cylinder TDI engine, an output of 55 kW (75 bhp) and pump-nozzle injection, clocks up 100 km on only 4.2 litres of diesel fuel, accelerates from 0 to 100 in 12.1 seconds and reaches a top speed of 173 km/h.

The A2 with four-cylinder spark-ignition engine, which again develops 55 kW (75 bhp), produces similar performance data and requires on average only 6.1 litres of fuel per 100 km (overall values acc. to 93/116 EC); it is classified as low-pollution according to EU4 legislation.

A2 Engine Efficiency The Audi A2 also redefines the standard when it comes to ease of servicing. It is the world’s first production car to have a “service module”.

On the Audi A2, a folding flap with a high-gloss painted finish takes the place of the conventional radiator grille; the oil dipstick and filler caps for engine oil and washer fluid are readily accessible behind this flap, for maximum convenience. In other words, the engine hood itself will generally only need to be opened in the workshop, for servicing purposes and with relative infrequency, at that.

Talk to an Audi A2 owner and they will wax lyrical about the car’s superb build quality and, in the case of the diesel at least, incredible fuel economy.

They like the variable service intervals, which mean petrol-engine cars need servicing about every 20,000 miles while diesel models can manage 30,000 miles. But the trump card was the fact that despite the A2’s relatively high initial purchase price, a slower than average rate of depreciation made it cheaper to own than many cars with a lower list price.

The 1.4 petrol and diesel units both produce 75bhp, but with much better torque the diesel model is the superior drive. In addition, its three-cylinder turbocharged engine can return over 20mpg more than the petrol. In July 2002 Audi added a 1.6 litre petrol engine to the line-up.

Using FSI technology, which injects fuel directly into the cylinders, on paper at least it provides good power and levels of economy close to that of a diesel. Unfortunately the reality is less impressive and at low to mid-range revs the engine feels flat.

Clean new diesel for Audi A2 The new model is more costly than the 75bhp version, and remains in the lowest 15% company car tax band because it meets Euro IV emissions standards, so avoiding the usual 3% penalty on diesels. The new model hits 60mph in 10.9sec, 1.4 seconds faster than the 75bhp 1.4, while top speed is extended by 10mph to 117mph. These figures also beat the new A2’s closest rival, the Mercedes A170 CDi.

It takes 12.1sec to reach 60mph, returns 57.9mpg and sits in the 18% company car tax band. A2’s recyclability The A2 is the first commercially manufactured car to have a body entirely constructed of aluminium, which ultimately ensures the vehicles complete recyclability, but also improves the more immediately important issue of performance.

This ultra-light, environmentally friendly body combined with a strikingly streamlined form enhances the efficiency and performance of the 1.4-litre engine. Impressive Fuel Economy The real green talking point of the Audi A2 however is the impressive fuel economy.

The manufacturers claim that the A2 delivers an average of 45 mpg, which would comfortably place the car ahead of its main rival – the Mercedes A140, which offers around 38 mpg. However, we found that, driven frugally, the A2 can easily give an mpg rating in the low 60s.

On long runs, with energy-draining features like air conditioning kept to a minimum, the fuel economy far exceeded our expectations for a petrol vehicle. With carbon dioxide emissions of only 144g/km, the Audi A2 is genuinely one of the greenest cars on the market.
