Citroen C4 Gearboxes

The 4 speed automatic, 6 speed EGS and 6 speed automatic have two shifting options of either the fully automated/automatic mode or the paddle-shifted manual mode, chosen by a column mounted mode selector. The EGS/automatic gearbox also brings with it an air conditioned storage compartment (fridge) including can holders, between the driver’s and the front passenger’s seat, where the manual transmission lever would usually be.

Space is freed between the driver and front seat passenger by locating a handbrake button on the dashboard with steering wheel mounted paddle controls the means of operating Citroen’s 6 speed clutchless manual transmission (called Electronic Gearbox System). Electro-hydraulic gearbox control makes for smooth, fast gear changing. At the same time, automated gear and clutch management cuts fuel consumption by between 3% and 5%, compared with a conventional manual gearbox. This new gearbox therefore provides a real alternative to manual and automatic transmissions.

By means of automating gear changes and clutch control, this new gearbox obtains a reduction of fuel consumption on the order of 3 to 5% in comparison to a conventional manual gearbox. Fuel savings are boosted by the presence of a 6th gear.

Due to its particularly fuel-efficient engine, the C4 HDi 110 DPFS with the six-speed electronic gearbox system thus brings fuel consumption down to 4.5 litres per 100 kilometres in a combined cycle, with CO2 emissions of 120 grams per kilometre.

The six-speed electronic gearbox system offers outstanding user comfort and responsiveness to the driver’s commands. Its electro-hydraulic control system ensures smooth and lightning-fast gear changes in a wide range of transmission ratios, which makes driving with this gearbox particularly pleasant.

The new gearbox permanently adapts to the driver’s behaviour and reinforces his driving sensations in sports mode, which makes gear changes even faster. It also offers him peace of mind and driving comfort with the hill-hold control and easy acceleration dosage when manoeuvring, particularly in reverse.

The six-speed electronic gearbox system offers a real alternative to conventional automatic or manual transmissions – by the driving pleasure it procures as much as by the fuel savings it generates and its attractive price. This new gearbox expands the offer of automated manual gearboxes already available in the Citroën range.

The C4 can be lethargic at times. This is down to the Electronic Gearbox System (EGS), which, for all Citroen’s talk of convenience, can be jerky at times. The set up is no match for a manual. More generally, the engine is happiest when it’s not being rushed, and this is reflected in the relaxed driving experience. While the Citroen isn’t particularly thrilling, it’s safe and confident in corners. The steering is responsive as well, and delivers a decent amount of feel. Unfortunately, the brakes are extremely grabby, and while there’s a dash mounted electronic parking brake, the switch for this is a stretch. Ride quality is first rate, however – and a self levelling system on certain models adds to the car’s composure when laden. A manual five-speed gearbox is also available.

Electronic Gearbox System

An Electronic Gearbox System (also known as semi-automatic transmission, clutchless manual transmission, automated manual transmission, flappy-paddle gearbox, or paddle shift gearbox) is a system which uses electronic sensors, processors and actuators to execute gear shifts on the command of the driver. This removes the need for a clutch pedal which the driver otherwise needs to depress before making a gear change, since the clutch itself is actuated by electronic equipment which can synchronise the timing and torque required to make gear shifts quick and smooth. The system was designed by automobile manufacturers to provide a better driving experience, especially in cities where congestion frequently causes stop-and-go traffic patterns.

Despite superficial similarity, semi-automatic transmissions differ significantly in internal operation and driver’s “feel” from manumatic transmissions (such as Tiptronic). A manumatic, like a standard automatic transmission, uses a torque converter instead of clutch to manage the link between the transmission and the engine, though a manumatic has the ability to signal shifts manually which is not found on a regular automatic. Nonetheless, many modern semi-automatic transmissions can operate in the same manner as a conventional type of automatic transmission by allowing the transmission’s computer to automatically change gear.
