The 1.5 came first, with a 75.5 mm bore and 83.5 mm stroke. The 1.3 was de-bored to 71.5 mm bore. The alpha family continued at least through 2005 in Hyundai’s Accent economy car. The G4ED Alpha II was enlarged to 1.6 L (1599 cc) thanks to a 76.5 mm bore and 87 mm stroke. A 10:1 compression ratio produced 104 hp (78 kW) at 5800 rpm with 106 ft·lbf (144 N·m) of torque at 3000 rpm. The Alpha II has a cast iron engine block and aluminum DOHC cylinder heads with 4 valves per cylinder. It uses MFI fuel injection and features forged steel connecting rods.

Hyundai Beta Engine

The Hyundai Beta engine is a 1.6 L to 2.0 L straight-4 built in Ulsan, South Korea. All Beta engines are DOHC designs meaning a double overhead camshaft (also called double overhead cam, dual overhead cam or twincam) valvetrain layout is characterized by two camshafts being located within the cylinder head, where there are separate camshafts for inlet and exhaust valves. In engines with more than one cylinder bank (V engines) this designation means two camshafts per bank, for a total of four.
Double overhead camshafts are not required in order to have multiple inlet or exhaust valves, but are necessary for more than 2 valves that are directly actuated (though still usually via tappets). Not all DOHC engines are multivalve engines. As early as 1930, the Duesenberg straight 8 engine had 2 overhead camshafts and 4 valves per cylinder. Today DOHC is synonymous with multivalve heads, since almost all DOHC engines have between three and five valves per cylinder. Applications are to the Tiburon and Elantra.

The Hyundai Delta engine family is the company’s smaller V6, ranging from 2.5 L to 2.7 L. Both share the same 75 mm stroke and both are DOHC designs. Applications are to the Sonata, Santa Fe, Tiburon and Tucson.

The Hyundai’s Epsilon engine is its smallest straight-4 automobile engine. The straight-4 or inline-4 is an internal combustion engine with four cylinders aligned in one row. Nicknamed a four-banger, this straight engine configuration is the most common in cars with a displacement up to 2.3 Litres. The current “practical” limit to the displacement of Straight-4 engines in a car is around 2.7 litres. However, in tractors and other construction machinery, four-cylinder diesel engines with a displacement of 4.5 litres and above can still be found.

The Hyundai Lambda engine family is the company’s modern all-aluminum V6. It is manufactured at Hyundai’s HMMA plant in Montgomery, Alabama. Applications are to the 2006 Sonata and the 2007 Santa Fe.

The Omega is Hyundai Motor Company’s only V8 engine. It is a DOHC unit with electronic multiport fuel injection. The G8AA (also called the 4.5D) displaces 4.5 L (4498 cc) with an 86 mm bore and 96.8 mm stroke. Applications are to the 2001 Hyundai XG300. The G6AU and G4HC (both also called the 3.5 D ) are the large 3.5 L (3497 cc) versions of the Sigma engine. Bore and stroke are both larger at 93 mm and 85.8 mm respectively. The 3.5 D has a cast iron engine block and aluminum DOHC cylinder heads. It uses MFI fuel injection, has 4 valves per cylinder, and features forged steel connecting rods. It is designed to run on “regular” unleaded gasoline rather than the premium fuel used in many other high-output V6 engines. Applications are to the Hyundai Santa Fe and the Hyundai XG350.

The Hyundai Sirius engine is the company’s largest straight-4 at 1.8 L to 2.4 L.

The Hyundai Theta (G4KC) is a gasoline 4-cylinder automobile engine family. It features hollow stainless-steel DOHC with powder-metal cam lobes, pent-roof combustion chamber and shimless bucket tappets in the cylinder head. The aluminum alloy engine block, which is formed using high-pressure die-cast method, has a unique Metaldyne-supplied cassette-type balance shaft module with a two-stage oil pump built-in. In the lower-end, the block is reinforced by a ladder frame. Other notable features include fracture-split sinter-forged connecting rods and stainless-steel exhaust manifold. Theta’s EMS(engine management system) software is EMS-II from Siemens VDO and the 32-bit PCM(Powertrain Control Module) calculates the amount of intake air by utilizing a contamination-proof hot-film type MAF(mass air flow) sensor.

Other most recent models include the Accent, Elantra, Azera and the Entourage.The Hyundai Alpha engine was the first to be designed in Korea. It was a modern SOHC 3-valve straight-4 and was available in turbo and naturally-aspirated versions. The first Alpha engine was introduced in 1993 in the Hyundai Scoupe and lasted through 2002.
