The Power behind the wheel
The 3.7L V-6 is coupled with a brand-new Sequential Sportshift 6-speed automatic transmission along with a new multi-clutch torque converter. With comparatively ‘short’ gearing in the first five forward gears, acceleration is enhanced- while fuel efficiency and quiet cruising are optimized with a relaxed sixth gear ratio. The transmission offers two automatic shift modes, or can be operated manually via racing-inspired steering wheel paddle shifters. Grade Logic Control, Shift Hold Control, Cornering G Shift Control and Hill Start Assist make the new 6-speed the most advanced automatic transmission ever offered by Acura. To support the MDX’s 5,000 pound towing capacity, a special front-mount gearbox fluid cooler is employed.
Complete with a V shaped grill and smoother contours, the vehicle has changed on the inside as well, including some tweaks to the engine and transmission system that Acura hopes will encourage consumers to buy. Aside from these changes, this V6 maintains the Acura name by being quiet and smooth. In fact, with the help of a six speed gearbox the ride has gotten even smoother. So the owners who loved the comfortable driving experience of older models will be even happier with more of the same in this year’s 2010 Acura MDX. This new 6-speed automatic gearbox replaces the previous, slightly befuddled 5-speed unit and gives Acura’s people-hauler some much needed confidence in gear selection.
The Acura MDX Gearbox is a serious improvement over the 5-speed unit found in the last generation MDX. Where the old gearbox seemed to hunt and pick for the appropriate gear, the new 6-speed is decisive and precise. Shifts are quick and smooth, and that extra cog allows the engine to breathe easier at highway speeds — offering up 1 mpg more than the 2009 model in both city and highway driving.

When buying a used car, the gearbox is one of the most important parts to check. We strongly recommend having a used car inspected by a mechanic before buying it, it will well worth it. Another thing to be concern about, ask if the car you are looking for was used for towing a trailer. Gearboxes wear out quicker in many cars that were used for towing a trailer.
