Acura TSX engine

The 2004 model year TSX’s power train consisted of a 2.4-litre inline four-cylinder engine, in 2005 it was the second year of the TSX and Acura has updated it, it was updated with slight changes to the engine by adding a further 5 hp.

2004 – 2008 First generation engines

The K24A2 engine put in the TSX was connected to the engine in the 7th generation Honda Accord, the Honda CR-V, the Honda Element, and a smaller version in the Acura RSX and RSX Type-S. The K24A2 featured intelligent variable valve timing and produced 205 horsepower (150 kW) in this feature.

Since the 2006 model year, the Acura TSX has used a 2.4-litre inline 4 cylinder engine making 205 hp SAE J1349 net. The advertised increased power figures on previous models were over estimated by +10 hp (7 kW), the actual power rating is 205 hp. SAE J1349 is a third party program designed to eliminate ambiguities that allowed engine makers to cite power and torque ratings higher than the engine’s actual capabilities.

On the intake side of the TSX engine, the diameter of both the throttle body and the intake duct were enlarged to increase induction flow rate from 95 litres per second to 110 litres per second. In addition the diameter and shape of the intake valve were enhanced to help increase intake flow by 16 percent and the high RPM cam profile for the intake cam was modified to provide increased intake valve lift and duration. In addition, a ventilation passage was machined into the engine block to reduce pumping friction by increasing air flow between cylinders.

2009+ Second generation engine

The new TSX uses a base engine similar to that of the 2008 TSX. The engine is a 2.4-litre in-line 4 cylinder engine reaching 201 hp (150 kW) and 172 lb ft (233 Nm) torque. While the rated power of the new TSX engine is 4 hp (3.0 kW) lower than that of the 2008 model, Acura says the new engine distributes power across a much wider rpm range, which along with the increased torque, provides an increased feeling of power for the driver.

The TSX was slated to receive a high performance 2.2-litre iDTEC clean turbo diesel engine in the 2010 model year; however, it was later announced that Honda had abandoned its plans to bring diesel engines to the U.S. and Japan in favour of hybrid gasoline-electric power trains. Instead, a 280 hp 3.5 litre V6 will be available in the 2010 Acura TSX. The TSX V6 will only be available with the 5-speed automatic transmission.

The 2010 TSX is an entry-level sedan, and according offers only one exterior styling package and one trim level per engine package.

Reviews of the 2010 Acura TSX’s four-cylinder engine range from “sufficient if not overabundant” amounts of power from the reviewers to “surprisingly good low- and mid-range punch” from the normally conservative reviewers. While some reviews said they dislike the need to “let the engine rev high” to get the most out of it.

The 2010 manages decent figures while also delivering good power, rated at 20/28 mpg for the four-cylinder manual, while the automatic boasts 21/30 mpg, numbers that Car and Driver finds to be “quite favourable.” The V-6 is rated at a fairly close 18/27 mpg, which is especially good considering the extra 79 horsepower the engine offers.

2010 TSX engine reviews

” As you might imagine, adding 79 bhp has a positive effect on acceleration. We achieved 0-60 mph in 5.9 seconds, versus 7.5 sec. for a TSX 4-cylinder with a 6-speed manual we tested in our July 2008 issue. … But more than pure numbers, what’s important about the TSX V-6 is the huge amount of mid-range, tire-spinning power available, especially compared to the 4-cylinder’s. The V-6 also makes more alluring sounds when driven with vigour, yet it’s smoother and quieter around town.” – Road and Track

“Not only is the auto’s manual mode responsive, smooth, and relatively quick, it also helps scoot the TSX down the drag strip with alarming alacrity. Zero to 60? How about 5.9 seconds.” Motor Trend

“Bend the TSX into a tight corner or a gentle sweeper and this sedan generates serious smiles. And that’s really what separates a good sport sedan from an average one. Did you enjoy the last 17 hairpin turns, or did it seem like work? The Acura TSX V6 is quite fun to drive hard.” – Popular Mechanics

“The car is certainly quick — around 6.5 seconds to 60 mph — but you really have to wring the tachometer to get it moving. … Fine for a Civic, OK for an Accord, but lacking in that gratifying quality of effortlessness that luxury cars have, even entry-luxury cars.” — Los Angeles Times
