What the Peugeot Boxer shares other vehicle makes This shares its body and engine with the Citroen Relay and Fiat Ducato. There are some tiny differences in specification, warranty and price between the three but essentially they are the same.

Engines offered in 1994 were a 1.9 litre diesel offering 70 bhp, a 2.5 litre diesel offering 86 bhp and a 2.5 litre turbo diesel with 100 bhp. In 2002, all engines became HDi common rail versions a 2.0 litre with 86bhp, a 2.2 litre with 104 bhp and a 2.8 litre with 127 bhp. There are 140 variants all told, with three wheel bases and four gross vehicle weights of 2.5, 2.9, 3.3 and 3.5 tonnes.

On the front line

Peugeot’s Special Vehicle Operations division is converting the Peugeot vans. They are known for being heavy duty, reliable and versatile. And now Peugeot’s vans will further cement their reputation by taking up front line duties with Northumbria police.

Officers on crowd control duties at events include football matches and parades; they will use reinforced four-ton Boxer vans from Peugeot’s Special Vehicle Operations division.

The standard vans have been converted with reinforced bodywork, glass and tyres. Hi-visibility markings, lights and sirens have also been added to the vans, which are powered by a 2.2 litre 120bhp (HDi 120) diesel engine.

The Boxers, all on 24-hour standby, have been designed to carry specialized kit including protective shields, communications equipment and fire extinguishers.

The Boxer panel van

Model designations like this are the norm in the panel van sector where the manufacturers are faced with a complex collection of body styles and engines to make sense of. In fact, with the Boxer, Peugeot have taken an approach that’s refreshingly simple. This van comes in three lengths (L1, L2 and L3) and two heights (H1 and H2) with a choice of three engines. A tested vehicle had the middle body length, the lowest roof and the 120bhp HDi diesel engine.

This is a small to mid-sized Boxer and as such, is the sort of vehicle that many operators will choose. The French manufacturer isn’t known for its real heavyweight panel vans in the way that the likes of Mercedes-Benz, IVECO and Volkswagen are, so although the latest Boxer can be specified up to a commanding size, it’s the smaller versions that are likely to sell most strongly.

Doing the business under the bonnet was a 2.2-litre HDi diesel engine with 120bhp to call upon. This doesn’t sound like a whole lot in today’s money but the unit is specially tuned to produce a powerful torque output of 320Nm at just 2,000rpm, equating to plenty of shove off the line where a working panel van needs it.

The Peugeot Boxer was a sizable vehicle but the engine had little trouble getting it moving. Most of the test took place with relatively light loads on the back so there might be an issue when the van is fully-loaded but the way the unit pulled through the gears gave no indication that there would be.

The Boxer has received criticism for its refinement but the full height bulkhead on the model blotted out the road roar from the load area and the engine itself is pretty refined.

Over the course of the test, it was found that the L2 H1 120 HDi model to be extremely user friendly and surprisingly enjoyable to drive.
